Machrihanish Dunes Golf Club Review

Machrihanish Dunes clubshack

Just the other side of Campbeltown airport is Machrihanish Dunes Golf Club.  Built in 2009 this is the younger sibling from the 150-year-old Machrihanish Golf Club.

The first thing to say about this place is ‘keep driving’.  Keep driving out of Campbeltown itself and follow the signs, no matter how bumpy the road gets.  The car parks is just a stony space and when you first see the clubhouse you will think “That cannot be it?”.  But it is.

But, what the clubhouse lacked, the course made up for. The greens were some of the most bonkersly undulating I have EVER played on. And some of them were huge, so if you ended up in the wrong place, a 3-putt was almost inevitable.

We were playing in a 3-club wind which made some of the ‘into the wind’ holes fiendishly difficult and there was the same problem as the day before at Machrihanish with burnt fairways which meant if your ball striking was not in good order, it was going to be a very long day.

Caddies, buggys & trolleys at Machrihanish Dunes Golf Club

We rented electric trolleys for the day for £20. I chose against having a caddie for the second day in row as I did not want to pay more money to just play crap golf in front of a stranger!

A few hours after us was a group of American golfers playing and the club sourced 15 caddies for them all at the same time so clearly there is no supply problem in the area.  I suspect they are all members.

The clubhouse at Machrihanish Dunes Golf Club

As mentioned above the clubhouse is more of a clubshack.  But it’s a cute little shack.  No showers here. No balcony. A few outside tables to have a drink at and no pro shop to speak off, just a random selection of golf clothes in case you needed an emergency purchase or collect logoed golf clothes.

No showers and towels. So be warned, if the weather looks wet, bring spare clothes and a towel.

Getting to Machrihanish Dunes Golf Club

There’s no different comment to my blog post from the day before when we played Machrihanish Golf Club.  Both courses are a long way from anywhere!  But, well worth the trip.
